We are now on the Fediverse. And that isn’t all. Dare we say a bit of cutting edge with multi-authors and audio distribution? I am sure we are following others, but how it’s all pulled together on our site, well….

In this episode of On Community, host BobWP is joined by Derek Hanson from Automattic’s Special Projects Team and Matthias Pfefferle who has been working on the open web and Fediverse for a long time but joined Automattic to work full time on the Activity Pub plugin.

This is the key component as we grow Do the Woo through this partnership and collaboration.

If you are interested in the Fediverse and connecting to Do the Woo, this is a must-listen-to episode.

In this episode of the WordPress Way, host Abha Thakor chats with Matthias Pufferley and Robert Windisch about a vision of the future of distributed social media in WordPress.

Robert has been talking about the potential of WordPress to evolve into a social network platform where users can publish, consume, and interact with content in a decentralized manner for sometime and is very passionate about it.

The three of them talk about the necessity for the WordPress community to adapt and engage with new tools, particularly focusing on young users. The episode also highlights various plugins, such as ActivityPub and Friends, that enable decentralized social networking, and emphasizes the importance of community feedback to shape this vision.

Bringing Back Conversations: Matthias Pfefferle on ActivityPub and WordPress

On the podcast today we have Matthias Pfefferle. Matthias is the creative force behind the ActivityPub plugin for WordPress, and he’s here to tell us how this plugin integrates with the broader Fediverse ecosystem.

Matthias, as you will hear, is a passionate blogger who started his journey in the early 2000s. His interest in decentralised web standards, such as pingbacks and trackbacks, eventually led him to the creation of the ActivityPub plugin for WordPress.

The primary goal of ActivityPub is to create a decentralised communication protocol. This protocol supports the integration and interaction of various social networks in a way that maintains the user’s autonomy over their data, unlike traditional social platforms like Facebook or Twitter, which erm… don’t allow that kind of thing!

With the ActivityPub plugin installed, WordPress sites can join the Fediverse. When a blog post is published, it’s no longer just a blog post confined to your website, it becomes a part of a larger social media network. Followers on platforms like Mastodon or PixelFed can see your content directly in their feeds and interact with it without ever leaving their preferred social network.
